On the one hand, this body mourns DC’s passing on this anniversary of his death. That despite his readiness and his own enthusiasm to take the next step on his journey, a true friend was lost.
On the other hand, the Self celebrates the end of a great soul’s incarnation, and remains in contact with that essence to this day.
DC used to say frequently that as a human being he was utterly insignificant, but as a Self he had power beyond imagining. He said that was true of all of us, of course – that we were just spread out on the way up the mountain, whereas he was at the top of this particular one.
His dearest hope was that his reservoir of writings would help others begin to realise what life is actually about, and, if they were ready, to make those difficult and irrevocable first steps to join him at the summit.
Love and blessings to us all

This is a quote of Jeddu Krishnamurti, spoken when he decided to refuse the mantle of world teacher that some were seeking to thrust upon him.
Unfortunately, having proven that he was, despite having reached the final stage of enlightenment, unsuitable as a teacher, he still continued to teach throughout his life. Continue reading →
The brain tends to take shortcuts, to support what our personality dictates as important. Some of us don’t habitually see the wood for the trees.
Equally some of us don’t habitually see the individual trees in a wood. Neither is “right.” Both are limitations on how things actually are, imposed on us by the personality.
This is a characteristic example of how the personality limits our freedom to experience. But we can live in freedom outside our personality, if we are willing to undertake the necessary training, and give up the body’s limiting habits.
Matthew 6.5-6 gives instruction on how and how not to pray/meditate. This is often, translated as to pray privately, and not for public admiration. Yet Jesus, who certainly knew what he was talking about, took the trouble to tell people to pray/meditate in a small chamber.
Experience teaches that setting up such a “den” is very effective, especially when the body is not troublesome, or, indeed, if the body might be persuaded to be helpful.
- Make the room somewhere the body enjoys being in
- comfortable, warmish, small
- Use spiritually evocative pictures, candles, perhaps music
- Use small amounts of good quality incense, use the same one until you get a clear sign to change.
- An ioniser, or living plant.
- Don’t use this room for materialistic purposes, e.g. work, chatting on the phone, etc.
If you don’t have a small room, use a screened area, or a dedicated cupboard in a shared room which you can pack and unpack. If you are travelling, follow the Islamic and Hindu custom and take a familiar prayer mat or other sacred object (a picture, say, or your spiritual diary) with you.
Set the scene, sow the seed, reap the harvest.
Eventually you will be able to meditate anywhere. everywhere. For now, accept where you are.
“Spiritual” is used on this site as a not-quite-opposite word to “Material.” Spiritual “things” are not actually things at all, but things like love, aspiration, reverence, intuition – and also hate, denigration and irreverence. Material things, on the other hand, are actually things!
Although what the nature of material things is, is another matter.
As with Secular/Religious, there is quite a grey area.
I had the good fortune to meet with DC’s nephew, James, and his sister Edna yesterday, on Deer Isle, in DC’s former home. For me, as you might imagine, it was an extraordinary experience.
James mentioned that when DC was teaching him he often talked about “switches.” These are personal ways of switching on awareness, and each individual should pay attention to them closely. Many of us will have had experiences of stimuli engaging our attention and bringing us into the present moment, fully aware. It could be a picture, a crystal, a location, music, perhaps even an essay!
These are your switches. Note them carefully so that you remember them. Use them to turn your awareness on.
