Corvus, in his essays, writes “The awake Self perceives outward to the object, and gets information from the object itself.”
First, find your object. It is to be an object which is baggage and history free, so that perception is not weighted down with memory and thought. It is not to be desireable, like a toy or a human being or animal. An “Eye Candy” picture off the blog is a possibility (Corvus loads these with his awareness), as is a plant or flower.
Spend a few moments in peace and quiet. Relax. Affirm to the object “I want nothing from you” as often as you need to, to allow those words to sink in, and focus your attention upon it as a whole.
You might make a habit of finishing your daily meditation/prayer practice in this way. Making it a routine will help diffuse any desire to get a particular experience from the object, which of course is body/brain stuff and gets in the way.
